Your journey begins with a choice between the Sport Pilot Certificate and the Private Pilot Certificate, allowing you to select the pathway that best fits your goals, medical eligibility, and budget.

Sport Pilot

An affordable and accessible introduction to aviation.

For many students, the Sport Pilot Certificate offers the fastest path into the cockpit and, for eligible individuals, does not require an FAA Medical Certificate. Train in modern aircraft while learning the fundamentals of safe flight.

Carry one passenger
Day VFR operations (can not earn the instrument rating)

61.305 - 61.313

Be at least 17 years old
Hold a medical certificate OR a valid U.S. driver’s license
20 hours of flight time
- 15 hours of flight training from an authorized instructor.
- 5 hours of solo flight.
- 2 hours of cross-country flight training.
- 10 takeoffs and landings to a full stop.
- One solo cross-country flight of at least 75 nautical miles total distance with a full-stop landing at a minimum of two points and one segment of the flight consisting of a straight-line distance of at least 25 nautical miles between takeoff and landing locations.
- 2 hours of flight training in preparation for the practical test.
- Ground training from an instructor or home-study course.

Private Pilot

The Private Pilot Certificate opens the door to a wider range of aircraft, longer trips, and greater operational flexibility. Whether you're flying your family to the beach, attending aviation events, or purchasing your first airplane, this certificate provides the foundation for a lifetime of aviation.

61.103 - 61.109

Be at least 17 years old
Hold an FAA Medical or meet Basic Med requirements
40 hours of flight time
At least 20 hours of flight training from an authorized instructor in a single-engine airplane
At least 10 hours of solo flight training
3 hours of flight training on the control and maneuvering of an airplane by reference to instrument
3 hours of night flight training
3 hours of cross-country flight training
One solo cross-country flight of at least 100 nautical miles total distance
10 hours of solo flight time consisting of at least
- 5 hours of solo cross-country flight time
- 1 solo cross-country flight of at least 150 nautical miles total distance with landings at 3 airports
- 3 takeoffs and landings at an airport with an operating control tower.

Hold at least a current private pilot certificate or be applying for one
50 hours of cross-country time
40 hours of simulated or actual instrument flight time
Pass the required knowledge test
