Sport Pilot Course

Sport Pilot Course Overview

The Sport Pilot Certificate provides an accessible path into recreational aviation with a lower FAA flight-time requirement than the Private Pilot Certificate. Train in our efficient Alpha Trainer LSA while developing the knowledge, judgment, and flying skills needed to safely operate an airplane on your own.

For qualifying applicants, daytime Sport Pilot privileges may be exercised using a current and valid U.S. driver’s license instead of an FAA medical certificate. Sport pilots may carry one passenger and operate eligible aircraft for personal and recreational flying.

Our syllabus-driven program is divided into three stages, taking you from your first flight through solo operations, cross-country flying, and preparation for the FAA practical test. Students who later continue to the Private Pilot Certificate can build upon the knowledge and experience developed during this course, subject to the applicable Private Pilot requirements.

A word about course pricing at FalKor Aviation Academy

The FAA requires a minimum of 20 flight hours for the Sport Pilot Certificate. However, the minimum is an eligibility threshold—not a guaranteed completion time or a realistic budget for every student.

As you may have found, many flight schools advertise only aircraft rental and flight instruction at or near the 20-hour minimum. Ground instruction, briefings, stage checks, testing fees, and additional proficiency training are not always included.

Our estimates also include structured ground instruction, meaningful pre-flight and post-flight briefings, and formal stage checks throughout the course.

The Course includes:

  • 30 total aircraft hours
  • 24 hours of dual flight instruction
  • 6 hours of solo flight
  • 10 hours of preflight and postflight briefing
  • 40 hours of structured ground instruction
  • 3 stage checks
  • Preflight and postflight briefing with every flight lesson
  • Online syllabus integration
  • Online scheduling, lesson grading, and progress tracking

Estimated investment: Program starting at $9,950; see below.
Typical duration: 2–6 months
Recommended pace: 3–6 sessions per week
Aircraft options: Alpha Trainer or glass-equipped Cessna 172S

Students are only billed for the aircraft and instruction they use.

Sport Pilot Course Details

A Sport Pilot Certificate provides an accessible pathway to recreational flying with fewer required flight hours than the Private Pilot Certificate. It allows you to serve as pilot in command of eligible aircraft and enjoy personal flying without pursuing a professional aviation career.

As a sport pilot, you can:

  • Fly eligible aircraft for recreation and personal travel
  • Carry one passenger
  • Rent or own an eligible aircraft (Rental options may be limited by insurance policies)
  • Fly cross-country throughout the United States
  • Share eligible operating expenses with your passenger, provided you pay at least half
  • Operate at tower-controlled airports and within Class B, C, and D airspace after completing the required training and receiving an instructor endorsement
  • Operate certain aircraft with up to four seats, although you may still carry only one passenger
  • Continue training toward a Private Pilot Certificate and more advanced pilot qualifications

For many applicants, Sport Pilot privileges may be exercised using a current and valid U.S. driver’s license instead of an FAA medical certificate, provided all FAA eligibility requirements are met.

Sport pilots generally operate during the day under visual flight rules. Night privileges are available after completing additional night training, receiving an instructor endorsement, and holding an FAA medical certificate or meeting the applicable BasicMed requirements.

A Sport Pilot Certificate does not allow you to carry more than one passenger, fly for compensation or hire, or operate an aircraft in furtherance of a business. Additional aircraft and airspace privileges may also require specific training and instructor endorsements.
